2018 SCT and ICT Policy Changes
With the start of the 2017–18 competition year, ÎÞÓǶÌÊÓƵ has implemented several changes to its collegiate game:
- Four-year Sectional Championship Tournaments will now be run untimed (with 11-question halves). This is an experimental change, and ÎÞÓǶÌÊÓƵ is interested in its effects on tournament length, host recruitment, and player satisfaction. There have also been other, relatively minor changes to the SCT hosting requirements.
- The 2018 Intercollegiate Championship Tournament (ICT) will experimentally run with 11-minute halves.
- Qualification for the ICT will now be done on the basis of tiers to ensure that the top 20 teams by D-Value (in each division) receive invitations. To accommodate this change, SCT champions (and undergraduate champions) are no longer guaranteed berths (even if their field had at least four teams).
- Host schools will now generally earn only a single invitation (in Tier 3) for hosting. This is different from ÎÞÓǶÌÊÓƵ’s previous policy in which a school could earn multiple bids if it had sent multiple teams to the previous ICT.
- ÎÞÓǶÌÊÓƵ has also revised its D-Value system based on data collected since 2010. D-Values are the statistic used by ÎÞÓǶÌÊÓƵ to compare the performance of teams at different SCTs.
